I first met Brian in 1991 or -92, shortly after moving to Santa Barbara. Both of us were taking a car care class at Adult Ed., and continued to do so for at least three years. We got to know eath other a bit (Brian can be more closed-mouthed than I am, believe it or not), talking about things like Brian going to visit his relatives who lived within walking distance of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway every Memorial Day weekend so he could see the race. I had recently got my first Mac, but never had any idea of what a MAC GUY Brian was until he walked into an SBMUG meeting 10 years or so ago.

I could go on about Brian's willingness to help starting with his first meeting, stepping in do take care of some emergency the day of the meeting, the fact that so many people remember Brian being the first person they met the first time they came to an SBMUG meeting, his masterfull Advanced SIG and Scripting presentations, and so many other things that have since leaked out of my head. Brian's generosity, patience, expertise and the high standards that he set for himself will sorely be missed.

And as so many others, I will miss him as a friend.

Brian's loss leaves a huge hole in my life and my heart. He was funny, smart, kind, generous, quirky, and wonderful. We shared programming tricks, cat stories, situational humor, gossip, ballistic data, science sites and stories, and a couple dozen other interests. He was a friend in all the ways that bond you to someone else who shares your funny interests and perspectives.

He house- and cat-sat for me and Bill when we needed it. I shared "how to" cooking tips when he needed it. We'd talk about how to handle certain problem situations or people. We'd speculate about "why?" or "how?" and we'd laugh, and smile, and share constant electronic winks -- "Brian/ Becky will appreciate and be humored by this too."

His early demise leaves a big hole in my life. Sometimes the good ones die young, and he was as good as they come. I'll continue to cherish his memory, and think of him daily for many years to come.

I missed Brian while he was in the hospital and I will miss him even more now that I know I will never see him on my Buddy List. My only contact with Brian was online because I live in Nevada, but he was always willing to help me on a MAC issue or just chat a little bit. He was a very special man and I will miss him.

I met Brian through the SBMUG meetings and quickly realized it was his presence that created the emphasis on attending. Beyond the meetings I also recognized that I was driving the 140 mile round-trip as much for the camaraderie after the meetings as the technical expertise during the meetings. There was not a topic that Brian could not speak intelligently to and I constantly looked forward to his insight.

Brian was a selfless human being. It is a rare thing to find someone as giving as Brian without an expectation of something in return. His presence in the MUG and amongst his large circle of friends will be sorely missed.

Brian, I pray there is an afterlife. Your appetite for knowledge could never be filled regardless of the duration spent within the confines of a human body. I can envision your freedom to explore all intellectual pursuits now that you are free from our worldly constraints. Godspeed friend, I will miss you greatly.

I miss Brian. So much!

Jill and I often told him he was our hero because if either of us had questions, were upgrading or trying something new, or had problems with our website, he always came through with the answer. Brian was a constant online presence for us.

And he was a dear friend to me. I still remember seeing him sitting on my office chair helping me set up a new computer and move to a new OS. Watching him smile and bubble with a chuckle. Trusting him that Petrini's meatballs were the best to be found when I treated him to dinner.

I know Brian loved us. He loved what he did and was a gifted teacher, and I learned so much from him! I know he would blush when I hugged him and did it anyway. He was too tall for me to kiss him on the cheek.

I have been flying mini kites as a tribute to Brian's soul soaring.
